Acne

The most common skin condition.

Acne affects an overwhelming majority of individuals throughout the world. Although mostly experienced by young adults and teens ages 12 - 24, acne can appear on anyone regardless of age, sex, or race.

Typical signs of acne appear after hair follicle pores become clogged from dead skin cells and excess sebum oil (a naturally occurring oil found on the skin to prevent dryness). This can lead to painful or sensitive outbreaks in the form of lesions, pimples, or zits.

Severe cases of acne can leave scarring or pits within the skin. It is always recommended to consult a dermatologist to address painful or irritated skin to avoid permanent damage on or around the affected area.

Frequently asked acne questions.

Many OTC treatments can alleviate symptoms and spreading for mild cases of acne. Treating acne sooner than later can prevent permanent scarring.

For more serious cases of acne, dermatologists may recommend:

  • Antibiotics
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Anti-inflammatory prescriptions
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Non-comedogenic products

Although not life-threatening, acne can cause painful lesions and sores on the skin. Instinctively, individuals pick and pop these affected areas to drain puss or relieve pressure. Further irritation can cause permanent scarring or pits in the skin if left to fester or become worse.

In addition to the physical impacts of acne, the mental impact from lowered self-esteem and embarrassment can cause a social decline in ones day to day life. Some individuals will avoid seeing friends, attending events, or even skip work in some instances.

No. It is always recommended to let a dermatologist address pimples or lesions on the skin. If done incorrectly, affected areas can become irritated or infected leading to further spread.

Unfortunately, no cure for acne currently exists. Many treatments can help prevent symptoms from worsening, and in some cases, eliminate problem areas altogether. Consulting a dermatologist can lead to more personalized recommendations based on the severity of your skin condition.
