Cysts

The lumps and bumps condition.

Found on the body in enlarged pockets of tissue, pus, and fluid, cysts may appear as blisters or large sacs. Swelling and redness may occur, leading to sensitive or painful areas on or around the cyst.

Cysts are not commonly malignant, but can be caused by certain types of cancer. Treatment to remove them is typically a simple outpatient procedure followed by a biopsy to detect any potential abnormalities.

Types of cysts include:

  • Epidermoid cyst: One of the most common types of cysts, an epidermoid is a benign, small bump caused by a buildup of keratin—an essential protein that stimulates skin, hair, and nail growth. A blockage of hair follicles can lead to a further buildup of skin cells and keratin leading to the common cyst.
  • Sebaceous cyst: Similar to an epidermoid but less common, sebaceous cysts contain a buildup of sebum oil within sebaceous glands. These parts of the skin and hair follicles become damaged or blocked causing pockets of pressure and sensitivity.
  • Ganglion cyst: Round lumps around the joints and tendons are classified as ganglion cysts. Filled with tissue and fluid, ganglion cysts typically appear on areas of the body previously affected by trauma or overstimulation. These are harmless and painless, but can apply uncomfortable pressure around the affected area.
